When you walk north along the harbour in Copenhagen on
your way to the city's maybe most popular tourist attraction, the little
mermaid, you will pass an impressive fountain. A part of it is an sculpture
depicting a woman behind a plow pulled by four bulls. You can clearly see how
the bulls are struggling, panting and sweating. It is the creation of Zealand
we see in front of us.
The sculpture is showing a story from the old nordic
poem Ragnarsdraapa and Snorre's younger Edda about queen Gevjon or Gefion. She
has pleased the swedish king Gylve and as a reward he promises her all the land
she can plow in a day and a night. She goes to Jotunheimen, home of the giants.
There she fetches the four sons she has with a jotun (giant). The sons turn themselves into
bulls and she puts them in front of the plow. A day and a night of hard
work starts. The story tells, the plow goes so deep that she can pull the
land away and place it in the nearby sound. There it still lies today and we
call it Zealand.
The Gefion fountain could be admired for the first time on July 14th 1908. The sculpture is designed by the Dane Anders Bundgaard and the complete fountain was gift to the city of Copenhagen from the Carlsberg Foundation celebrating the brewery's 50th anniversary.

Når du går nordover langs havnen i København på vei mot byens
kanskje mest kjente turist attraksjon, den lille havfrue, kommer man forbi en
imponerende fontene. Den inneholder en stor
skulptur som viser en kvinne bak en plog som blir trukket av fire kraftige
okser. Det er tydelig hardt arbeid. Man kan se hvordan oksene sliter,
puster og peser med ånden stående ut av neseborene. Det er Sjællands
tilblivelse vi her ser fremfor oss. Kvinnen bak plogen er dronning Gevjon eller
Gefion og oksene er de fire sønnene hennes..
Skulpturen skildrer historien fra Ragnarsdråpa og
Snorres yngre Edda om dronning Gevjon. Hun har vært til slik en glede for
svenskekongen Gylve at han som belønning lar henne få alt det land hun kan
pløye i løpet av en dag og en natt. Hun tar først til Jotunheimen og henter de
fire sønnen hun har fått med en jotun. De forvandler seg til okser som hun
spender framfor plogen. og så starter en dag og en natt med hard arbeid og mye
strev. Som historien forteller, pløyer de så dypt at hun kan terkke landet ut
og plassere det i sundet utenfor. Der ligger det den dag i dag og vi kaller det
nå Sjælland.
Gefionfontenen kunne første gang beundres av tilskuere den 14. juli 1908. Selve skulpturen er tegnet av kunstneren Anders Bundgaard og hele fontenen ble gitt i gave til København by av Carlsbergfondet i forbindelse med Carlsberg Bryggeris 50-års jubileum.
